WATERPUNK Gameplay
The cities are underwater now. Humanity lost its war against soulless machines, and what’s left of the survivors live in bunkers beneath the waves, sending volunteers up to the surface only when they’re desperate for resources. You’re one of those volunteers. Your job is to climb out onto the rusted platforms, grab what you can, fight off whatever the machines throw at you and, if you’re lucky, come back with something that might give humanity a second chance.
WATERPUNK plays like a classic top-down twin-stick shooter with a roguelite spine. Enemies hit hard and aren’t shy about it, so you’ll spend most of every run moving, dodging and lining up precise shots. Levels, enemies and loot are generated from scratch each time, and death is permanent, so every run is its own story. But failure isn’t wasted. Between runs you can upgrade your starting base, which means each attempt leaves you a little stronger for the next one.
The twist that gives the game its personality is time. A day-night cycle ticks forward whether you’re ready or not, and some perks only work during the day while others only wake up at night. That turns build planning into something more interesting than “pick the biggest numbers.” Do you lean into daylight abilities and rush, or build around the dark and survive until sunset? Stack that on top of dozens of weapons and active items you can mix and match, and you’ve got plenty of room to experiment with weird, satisfying combinations.
It’s also a very approachable size. The whole game weighs in at around 200 MB, and early Steam players have been positive, with many reportedly playing on Steam Deck. If you like the Gungeon and Nuclear Throne school of run-based shooters, WATERPUNK is an easy one to try, and there’s a free demo if you’d like a taste first.
