Crazy Machines is a physics puzzle game that’s basically a digital Rube Goldberg kit. You’re given a goal—pop a balloon, knock a ball into a bucket, flip a switch, launch a rocket—and a pile of parts to make it happen. The whole game is about chaining those parts together into a contraption that works, and half the fun is watching your first attempt fail spectacularly before you figure out what went wrong.
The core loop is simple to explain and hard to master. You drag components onto the play area: gears, belts, ramps, dominoes, candles, magnets, motors, cannons, balloons, mice, and plenty of other oddball objects. Then you hit play and watch physics take over. If the ball rolls off the ramp too early, you move the ramp. If the candle won’t light the fuse, you adjust the angle. It’s trial and error in the best way, and the game gives you just enough freedom that there’s rarely only one solution. Some levels have you building a single machine, others have you building a machine that builds another machine, and the later puzzles get genuinely devious.
There’s a level editor too, which is where the game really opens up. You can build your own puzzles, share them, and play other people’s creations, which is why the community stuck around for years. Some player-made levels are clever, some are cruel, and some are just there to see how much chaos you can cause before the whole thing collapses.
The presentation is lighthearted and cartoony, with cheerful sound effects and a lot of slapstick energy when things go wrong. It’s not a story game and it’s not a game you’ll binge for hours, but it’s perfect for short sessions where you want to think, tinker, and laugh at your own bad engineering. If you grew up with games like The Incredible Machine, this is that same itch.
