Dead Horde Gameplay

You’re a survivor of a mutant virus, and the city around you is full of things that used to be people. Your only way out is straight through them. That’s the whole pitch of Dead Horde: a top-down shooter where you and a comrade (or just you, if you’d rather go it alone) push through city streets, clearing out hordes of flesh-eating mutants and unlocking bigger guns as you go.

The action is classic arcade-style survival horror. You’ll start with basic weapons and work your way up to assault rifles, shotguns, grenades, mini-guns and more, all unlocked as you progress. The mutants don’t stand still, either. They evolve, growing bigger, faster and stronger as the game goes on, so the weapon that got you through the first stretch won’t be enough later. Between fights, there are vehicles to use and a few simple puzzles to solve, and the game is clear that teamwork is the key to surviving.

Co-op is where it shines. You can team up with a friend online, share a screen for local play or use Remote Play Together, which makes it a decent pick for a lazy evening with a buddy. It also supports Steam Achievements (28 of them), leaderboards and Steam Cloud saves.

Now for the honest part. Dead Horde is a 2011 indie game, and it shows. Steam reviews are Mostly Negative, with about 37% positive across more than 400 reviews, and the average playtime is reportedly only around an hour and a half. Think of it as a short, cheap co-op shooter rather than a polished horror experience. It’s priced accordingly, at under $4, and it sometimes goes on sale for even less.

Why are the reviews mostly negative?
It’s a dated 2011 indie shooter, and a lot of players find it short and rough. Treat it as a cheap, simple co-op game rather than a polished modern release.
