If you grew up reading the Warrior Cats books, you already know the world: four Clans, a sacred Moonpool, ancestors watching from StarClan, and a forest that’s never quite as peaceful as it looks. Clans of the Forest drops you into that world as a brand-new cat of your own making. A detailed cat creator lets you name your warrior and tweak their look with, according to the developer, millions of possible combinations, and then you head out into the Lake Territories to earn your place.
The adventure splits into three modes. Prophecy Mode is the story campaign, with four original stories, one for each Clan. Defender Mode is a survival test where you see how long you can last against the game’s toughest enemies in a single run. Skirmish Mode lets you battle other players online, asynchronously, meaning you don’t need to be playing at the same moment. Quests, characters and stories are procedurally generated, so no two playthroughs are meant to be identical.
Moment to moment, you explore iconic territories like ThunderClan’s forests, RiverClan’s marshlands, ShadowClan’s dark pine swamps and WindClan’s open moors, plus the Moonpool and the Island. You climb trees, pounce through undergrowth, track scents, forage for materials and solve environmental puzzles. Back at the den, you can craft items from what you’ve gathered. Fights are turn-based, with up to three-versus-three battles, 75 combat moves to discover and enemies ranging from mice and squirrels to badgers, foxes and rival Clan cats. You can also interact with nine cats from the books, visit friends’ camps online and help them by crafting or gifting resources.
Here’s the honest part. At launch, Steam reviews sit at Mixed, with roughly 47% positive across more than 1,100 reviews, so the game is clearly dividing players. The base game is $29.99, and there’s a separate Prophecy Pack DLC at $14.99. If you’re a fan of the books and enjoy cozy turn-based RPGs, it may well click for you.
