The world has ended, and what’s left of it is rolling along on a single train. You’re aboard with a handful of other survivors, all of them strange, all of them scared, and a few of them clearly hiding something. Dreadline Express asks a simple question: what do you do when the only thing you can trust is your own understanding of what’s happening? And it makes you earn every answer.

The game calls itself a “Metroidbrainia,” which is a mix of metroidvania structure and knowledge-based progress. Instead of unlocking abilities with new gear, you unlock progress with ideas. As you explore the train in first person, you collect the concepts, names and secrets you pick up from the people around you and store them as cards in your notebook. Then you use those cards to interrogate passengers, confront them with what you know and slowly piece together a larger picture. Gossip and half-truths become your tools, and the dread grows as the pieces start to fit.

The look matches the mood. Dreadline Express uses a chunky, retro-inspired 3D style that blends horror with a kind of grim dark humor, and the train’s cramped cars make every conversation feel uncomfortably close. Interestingly, the developer has said this is a horror game in which you can’t die, so the tension doesn’t come from health bars or jump-scare deaths. It comes from what you learn, and what it means.
