Big Dig Gameplay

Mayor Dog is running for re-election, and his campaign promise is simple: a gigantic highway that stretches across the whole Animal Republic. There’s just one problem. The land he wants to pave is full of old artifacts, and somebody needs to dig them out of the way. That somebody is you.

Big Dig starts the way a lot of incremental games do, with a small shovel and a lot of dirt. You dig, you find things, you sell or display them, and the money goes straight back into better tools. As the highway grows, so do your ambitions. You can hire a crew of helpers, get new equipment (like an excavator), and renovate your museum so that it earns you more. The highway cuts through beaches, suburbs, lakes, middle schools and more, and each stretch hides its own surprises.

The fun part is what you pull out of the ground. Finds range from everyday tennis balls all the way up to dinosaurs, and every one gets a spot in your museum, which you can decorate and expand with new rooms. It’s the kind of collect-everything loop that’s very easy to lose an evening to.

But what really sets Big Dig apart from other idlers is the story. The developers, two indie creators with some help from friends, wanted to take a beloved genre and add a narrative with a satisfying ending. The game is designed to be completed in roughly three to four hours, even in one sitting, and it deliberately skips infinite prestige loops and time-gated idle grinding. It tells a complete story and ends when it should, with plenty of jokes along the way. If you’ve bounced off incremental games before because they never end, this is a friendly one to try.
