Good Boy! is a charming third-person puzzle-platformer in which the player takes on the role of a likeable and extremely enthusiastic dog called Rufus, who searches for his missing owner throughout a whimsical, semi-open world while at the same time accidentally uncovering a bigger mystery. The main aspect of the gameplay involves abilities specific to dogs and solving environmental puzzles: Rufus can dig, detect hidden paths by using his sense of smell, retrieve objects that are some distance away, fit through narrow spaces, bark to distract or alert other characters, and carry out a special “zoomies” sprint, which allows him to move quickly across the ground but uses up his stamina and makes it hard to control precisely.

Unlike conventional platformers, the game is based on the strengths and limitations of seeing the world from a dog’s point of view—players view the world from a low angle, are unable to open doors or climb ladders, and have to make use of scent trails, faint audio hints, and the actions of other animals (such as squirrels, birds, and stray cats) to find alternative ways through each level. The gameplay cycle alternates between exploratory areas (a suburban neighbourhood, a farmer’s market, and a large city park) and more direct, obstacle-oriented challenge sections, in which Rufus has to combine digging, jumping, and barks that are timed correctly to make progress while avoiding dangers such as cars, angry geese, and grumpy shopkeepers.
