BLACKWOOD is a first-person horror game that drops you into an abandoned mining town deep in the Appalachians, and from the moment you step off the bus, you can tell something went very wrong here. The streets are empty, the houses are rotting, and there’s a constant low hum coming from somewhere underground that you can’t quite place. The setup is classic horror: you’re looking for someone who disappeared, and the trail leads you into a place that doesn’t want you there. What makes it work is how patient it is. Nothing jumps out at you in the first ten minutes. Instead, the game lets you walk, listen, and slowly realize you’re not alone.
The gameplay is built around exploration, puzzle-solving, and resource management. You carry a flashlight with limited battery, a camera for documenting evidence, and whatever you can scavenge along the way. There’s no real combat—if something finds you, your only options are hiding, running, or using sound to throw it off your trail. The town is semi-open, with boarded-up houses, a collapsed mine entrance, a church, and a network of tunnels underneath everything, and you’ll revisit locations more than once as you unlock tools that let you get further in. Notes and audio logs fill in the story of what happened to the miners, and some of them are genuinely unsettling in a quiet, creeping way rather than a loud, gory one.
What sets BLACKWOOD apart from a lot of indie horror is the atmosphere. The sound design is excellent—wind through dead trees, distant machinery, footsteps that don’t match yours—and the game uses darkness and silence better than it uses scares. There are a few moments where it drags, and the pacing won’t work for people who want constant action. But if you like slow-burn horror that trusts you to pay attention and piece things together yourself, it’s worth the ride. It’s the kind of game you play with headphones on and the lights off, and it sticks with you after you’re done.
