You wake up in a graveyard with a debt you didn’t agree to and a corpse that needs burying before breakfast. That’s how Graveyard Keeper 2 opens, and it doesn’t waste a second of your time. The first few days are a complete mess, really, as you’re just running around chopping wood, hauling stone, digging a hole in the ground for the bodies that keep on turning up. Then quite slowly the game starts to expand. You’re not just digging graves. You’re building a church, you’re running a congregation, you’re sourcing materials, and you’re working out which of the rather odd assortment of locals is going to be a good one to trust and which one is going to be the one to cheat you on a delivery. One thing leads to another. The logs you chop become the planks you build with, the bodies you bury become the sermons you preach, and the money you earn just disappears into the next thing you need.
What makes the loop work is how it respects your time without ever letting you coast. The day cycle pushes you to plan — talk to the right person in the morning, hit the mine by afternoon, get back before dark or waste a trip. The crafting chains run deeper than they first appear, and the game doesn’t hand you a neat quest marker for every step. You’ll figure things out by poking at them, reading what people tell you, and remembering it later. That friction is the point. It makes a simple delivery feel earned, and it makes the moment a new system finally clicks feel genuinely satisfying.
There’s the tone really doing the work here. It’s funny in a rather dry, odd way (it’s a game about death after all and never takes itself too seriously, full of odd little characters and little jokes in the item descriptions). Beneath the humour though it’s a very real management sim with a lot of bits and pieces to keep track of, and the balance between the two is what keeps you playing. You go in for the graveyard. You stay because you want to see what happens when you finally get the church properly running, or when the next corpse turns up with a note attached, which makes you pause and think.
Graveyard Keeper 2 builds on the first game’s foundation rather than throwing it out, and for anyone who enjoyed the slow, grindy satisfaction of the original, that’s exactly the right call. It’s a game about work, little progress, and the strange comfort of a job well done in a place nobody expects you to succeed. Bury the body. Build the church. Figure out the rest later.
