State of Decay: YOSE is an open-world zombie survival game that combines third-person action, base-building, and resource management into a continuous, consequence-based experience where each decision can mean life or death for your whole community. Instead of controlling a single hero, players control a whole group of survivors, each with their own skills, personalities, and personal problems. They can switch between them as they search abandoned houses, clear infested buildings, and recruit new allies from the remaining fragments of humanity.

The main gameplay cycle is all about balancing risk against reward: going farther from your base gives you rarer supplies (such as medicine, ammunition, fuel and construction materials) but puts your survivors at risk of becoming fatigued, getting injured and facing the constant danger from the undead, while remaining near your base ensures your safety but starves your community of the essential resources. Each action uses up time, stamina, and at times health, and the game continues to simulate the world even when you’re not playing—survivors eat food, morale changes and infestations spread, producing a real and dynamic apocalypse that punishes laziness and rewards careful planning.

The most striking feature of YOSE is its permadeath system: once a survivor has died, they are lost for good—there is no way to reload, no resurrection and no opportunity for a second chance—and their death has an effect on the community by reducing morale, leaving important skills vacant, and at times causing grief or conflict among the other members. Players must continually decide whether to send a more experienced, valuable survivor on a risky run or send a new player who might die but whose death would hurt less, creating continuous, extreme tension unmatched by most other games.

The main way in which players progress is by building bases, involving them in the taking over of abandoned locations (such as a church, a warehouse or a trucking depot) and then improving these sites using materials scavenged from the environment—by adding watchtowers, infirmaries, workshops, gardens and sleeping quarters—each expansion requiring resources and the allocation of survivors, which in turn takes them away from scavenging.

The YOSE edition includes the original game plus the Breakdown and Lifeline expansions, introducing new maps, new characters, and a military-themed narrative, while also improving the visuals, framerate, and lighting. The real aim is not to achieve a traditional victory, but rather to survive as long as possible by establishing a self-sustaining community capable of withstanding sieges, shortages of supplies, and the psychological effects of losing friends—eventually leading to a final, desperate attempt to escape the valley, in which the true cost of survival is measured not by the number of kills but by the names of those you were unable to save.
