Rent Due is a highly stressful first-person simulation game where players experience life as a tenant who is short on money and constantly races against a cruel monthly deadline to raise enough funds to pay the landlord before eviction day. The main element of the game is centred on urgent time management and working in the gig economy: every morning the player wakes up in their small, worsening apartment and has to decide how to spend their scarce energy and fading hours—by taking on poorly paid food delivery jobs, looking for hidden construction work, selling their plasma, pawning off their possessions, or even resorting to more dangerous activities such as street gambling or petty theft.

Each of these actions drains time, stamina, and mental health, so the player must constantly weigh earning money now against investing in skills or equipment that might pay more later. The apartment itself is a dynamic, deteriorating environment—repairs are neglected, mould spreads, utilities are turned off, and the player’s hunger and hygiene levels fall; each factor adds penalties to work performance and makes the economic situation even harder as the rent deadline approaches.

Rent Due moves beyond personal hardship to create a tangled web of social duties and exploitative financial structures that heighten the pressure. The players must deal with a group of unreliable neighbors, an exacting landlord, loan sharks, and a family member who needs money every week – each of these encounters can provide some immediate relief (like a loan or a place to sleep) but generally leads to longer-term consequences such as mounting interest, unfulfilled promises, or a ruined reputation that shuts the door on future possibilities.

The game incorporates a dynamic debt spiral mechanic where late fees, interest on payday loans, and reconnection charges balloon when left unchecked, producing a snowball effect that renders each month more challenging than the previous one unless the players manage to interrupt the cycle by landing a more dependable job or making ethically dubious choices. The only real objective is to last for twelve months without being evicted.

However, the game has various endings depending on the path you take—ranging from surviving as a poor but honest worker to adopting a life of crime, to eventually landing a salaried job and escaping the situation altogether.
