Bayonetta 2 Gameplay

Bayonetta is a witch who fights with guns strapped to her heels, hair that doubles as her clothing and an attitude that never once takes itself too seriously. Bayonetta 2 picks up with her on a mission that’s personal: her friend Jeanne’s soul has been dragged into the depths of Inferno, and the only way to get her back is to fight through some of the strangest, loudest and most beautiful set pieces in action gaming. Her quest takes her through the realms of Paradiso and Inferno, pitting her against angelic and demonic enemies at every turn.

At its heart, it’s a fast, combo-driven character action game. You string together punches, kicks and gunfire in long, flowing sequences, dodge at the last possible moment to trigger Witch Time and slow the world around you, then finish enemies off in style. The sequel builds on that formula with Umbran Climax, which lets Bayonetta summon enormous demons in regular battles rather than saving them for the end. Between fights, you can spend the Halos you collect at Rodin’s shop on new weapons, attacks and costumes, which keeps the loop of fighting, earning and upgrading feeling rewarding.

The Nintendo Switch version adds a couple of extras. Tag Climax, a two-player mode where you team up to fight waves of enemies and bosses (and can wager Halos against each other), is available both online and, on Switch, over local wireless. Amiibo support is included too. You’ll need Nintendo Switch Online for online play, and local wireless co-op needs each player to have their own Switch and a copy of the game.

Critics loved it. The Switch version holds a Metacritic score of 92, and the game is rated Mature (ESRB) and PEGI 16 for its violence and suggestive themes. If you enjoy high-speed action games with deep, stylish combat, this is widely considered one of the best of its kind.

Is Bayonetta 2 available on PC?
No. Bayonetta 2 has only been released on Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch, and there are no official PC system requirements. The original Bayonetta is available on Steam.

Do I need to play the first Bayonetta first?
It helps, because Bayonetta 2 is a direct sequel, but the story is easy enough to follow on its own, and the first game is available separately.

Can I play it in co-op?
Yes. Tag Climax is a two-player co-op mode available online and, on Switch, via local wireless. Local play needs two Switch systems and a copy of the game for each player.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes, for online play modes. Single-player and local wireless co-op don’t require a subscription.

How long is Bayonetta 2?
The main story takes about nine hours, with more time needed for extras and a completionist run (the Bayonetta 2 + Bayonetta 1 package lists around 47 hours for completionists).

Is it suitable for kids?
No. It’s rated Mature (ESRB) and PEGI 16 for violence and suggestive content.
